Citrus overnight oats | Glutenfreewhisk

This overnight oat recipe is inspired from princess Diana's overnight oats recipe. I love the citrusy tanginess of these overnight oats' recipe, and it is really a kind of morning breakfast that you want to have daily. Although Princess Diana's oatmeal recipe is inspired from a Swiss breakfast recipe Bircher Museli in which the oats are soaked in milk and then eaten with grated apples. But Instagram says the oats are soaked in orange juice and that's how Princess Diana loved them. So, I am following the Instagram version to have the best citrus overnight oats and hell yeah, they are tangy and citrusy. So, appetizing.

These overnight oats recipe are really modern version as I have used pumpkin seeds and chia seeds that were not viral or even used often in meals during Diana's time. But I am using the best fruit combination (black grapes) with the flavored yogurt (strawberry) to make it fruity and citrusy. The best part about this oatmeal recipe is that it is tangy yet so creamy. The reason I am not using grated apples is simple, I don't prefer eating apples, and I avoid then as often as I can because they just don't work for me. So instead, I am using a flavored yogurt with good amount of protein in it and natural seeds and black grapes.

Bircher muesli is made using milk, grated apples, oats, honey, yogurt and fruits and seeds/nuts of choice for topping. Instagram version of Princess Diana's oatmeal recipe is made by soaking oats in fresh orange juice overnight and the next day yogurt, honey and other seeds/nuts are added with grated apple. But my version of Princess Diana's oatmeal recipe is a little different. As I have mentioned earlier in my previous post as well that I love cinnamon in oats and it is non-negotiable, so, I have added it while soaking my rolled oats in fresh orange juice with pulp. You can even call this recipe as orange overnight oats because soaking them in orange juice instead of milk adds that freshness. Or orange cinnamon spiced overnight oats. Names can be so much fun right. I have added chocolate chips on top for extra fun. Also, I have skipped apples completely. Do try my version and see for yourself how flavorful, creamy and addictive this recipe is.

This cold breakfast recipe is perfect for hot summer days or even for lazy morning. Because this recipe requires no cooking or extra efforts just basic available ingredients, soaking and mixing. Yes, it is that simple. Skipping breakfast or having excuses to not have breakfast diminishes even more when you have such great breakfast option to choose from. In the past I have shared more overnight oats recipe with you because oats are a constant breakfast option for me. Following a gluten-free diet from almost 5 years now reduces the breakfast options that I generally use to have and overnight oats or a quick oatmeal have become a regular for me thus trying variations becomes a necessity.

You can check my variations and versions of overnight oats recipes, overnight oats with mulberry or two flavors of overnight oats with fresh fruits. If you really love apples then try my apple pie oats breakfast recipe, it is just amazing. If you like having smoothie bowls, then try my chocolaty recipe of overnight oats chocolate chia smoothie bowl. Overnight oats can be fun. You just have to experiment a little. And these amazing oats recipe are a proof. They are addictive and indulgent.

Personally, I use any glass bowl to prepare my overnight oats in but sometimes I forget to cover them. Like it happened with me in my overnight oats with mulberry recipe. In order to avoid that you can look for these, the better home overnight oats jar with a wooden lid and spoon. Pack of two, each being 680 ml. They are quite handy and multipurpose.

INGREDIENTS -

1 cup rolled oats, gluten-free

140 g Strawberry flavored yogurt

Half a cup chopped black grapes

Juice of 1 whole orange with pulp

Honey, as per taste

1 tsp cinnamon powder

Juice of 1 lemon

2 tbsp pumpkin seeds

2 tbsp chia seeds

Handul of chocolate chips for garnish

I use yogabar rolled oats as they are gluten-free, non-GMO and plain. Oats are naturally gluten-free but if you check behind every pack available in market allergen warning says may contain gluten or may contain wheat. So, I prefer oats or any other food item that mentions that it is gluten-free.

METHOD -

1. In a bowl take oats, chia seeds and add orange juice and cinnamon powder to it. Mix well. The oats and chia seeds should completely be soaked in with a little extra liquid because they will absorb all of it by the morning. Cover and let them soak overnight in a refrigerator.

2. The next morning, add strawberry flavored Greek yogurt to it followed by honey to taste, chopped black grapes, pumpkin seeds, lemon juice to it and mix it all well until combined. Transfer it to the serving bowl.

3. Garnish with pumpkin seeds, chocolate chips and chopped grapes and indulge.

Note - You can even use canned or store-bought orange juice to make this orange cinnamon spiced citrusy overnight oats. I prefer fresh juice, but it depends on season. Instead of flavored Greek yogurt use a normal or regular Greek yogurt. I have used strawberry flavored for extra fruit magic.
