Gluten-free tofu donuts recipe | Glutenfreewhisk
I used to love having donuts but that was a long time ago. When I saw this perfect tofu donut recipe online, I knew I have to try this but a gluten-free version of it. So here is a great tofu donut recipe that you can air fry also, but I am deep frying it for now because I want to check if my gluten-free donuts will split open in hot oil and they didn't. They turned out to be great, and I will now try them with an air fryer also. Eating these tofu donuts is nothing like the experience of eating those maida donuts but they are uniquely scrumptious and I loved every bite of it. As we always say in our family that everything with maida is always tasty and with me being gluten intolerant now, this gluten-free donut recipe is like a savior. Sweet satisfying indulgence for sure.
The recipe of these vegan tofu donuts is really very simple but the only thing that I was concerned about was whether these will stay intact while frying. I was worried because these are gluten-free and I am using tofu which is fairly dry and had no binding and the rice flour that I have used is again without any gluten, the arrowroot powder does help, I think. Don't know the exact science behind every flour but the recipe is a 100% tried and tested and the donuts on frying stayed perfectly intact. So just follow along and you will get the best vegan and gluten-free donut experience at home.
I have used tofu in some of my desserts earlier also and I find this ingredient really interesting just like paneer or cheena but a vegan version and since it has a different texture and taste, I personally enjoy using tofu in my dessert recipes. If you are a tofu lover yourself and you would like to use tofu in your healthy dessert recipes then you can check no bake lemon tofu cheesecake recipe with grape compote or you can check this no bake chocolate cheesecake cups. If you are looking for a simpler and quicker dessert recipe with tofu you can try my coffee and mixed berries tofu pudding. You can try this with your favorite seasonal fruit of choice and indulge in this high protein dessert recipe with tofu.
The first ever donut I tried was from Dunkin donuts when I was in college and it was a cinnamon dusted donut, a classic donut. And this tofu donut recipe that I am sharing today is with cinnamon sugar dust keeping that in mind. A full circle. Donuts are deep fried, sugary treats and are not healthy. An occasional donut or two won't hurt but if you try this recipe then you can actually have a few of them guilt free. And if you bake these donuts or air fry them then they became way healthier and still super indulgent. Don't find any excuse or call them unhealthy, just give them a try.
These tofu doughnuts turned out to be soft and chewy with a perfect crisp layer on the outside that is not very crisp, just like a donut should be. Soft, sweet and delicious. I could actually taste sweet tofu while having them. The rice flour and arrowroot powder did not overpower the taste or made them doughy. A great gluten-free donut recipe that everyone who loved donuts once and cannot eat them because of gluten.
Use melted vegan chocolate to make this recipe completely vegan. You can use Daarzel vegan and gluten-free coconut chocolate bar or use Entisi vegan 75% dark chocolate. I am using urban platter arrowroot powder and the rice flour is from a local shop from where I buy all my gluten-free flours like maize flour, ragi flour and others.
INGREDIENTS -
For tofu donuts recipe
1 block of Tofu
3-4 tbsp Arrowroot powder
3-4 Rice flour
Brown sugar, to taste
Half a tsp baking soda
Half a tsp baking powder
A pinch of salt
Oil, for frying
For dusting the donuts
2 tbsp Powdered sugar
2 tbsp Cinnamon powder
For garnish
Melted dark chocolate
Tulsi sprig
Any flower of choice
METHOD -
1. In a blender take tofu and blend it to a very fine paste. If there are pieces left, make sure you mash them with your hands or use the back of a spoon. Don't add any water while blending it.
2. Now in a bowl take this fine tofu paste with rice flour, arrowroot powder, pinch of salt, baking powder and baking soda and combine it all. Now add sugar to taste and use your hands to mix everything up and to feel the batter consistency. If there are any tofu pieces, make sure you mash them.
3. Make round balls out the batter and set aside.
4. Heat the oil for frying. Carefully place the tofu donuts in the oil and let then fry from all sides evenly. Since I am not taking a lot of oil, so I am flipping and turning them frequently but if you are taking enough oil to deep fry then make sure you vary the temperature/heat/gas accordingly.
5. In the meantime, mix powdered sugar and cinnamon powder together and set aside.
6. Carefully remove the fried tofu doughnuts from the oil over a napkin for them to soak excess oil and put them in the sugar cinnamon mix when they are still hot. Allow them to roll lightly so that the sugar cinnamon is coated well.
7. Put them in the serving plate. Garnish with choice of flower and tulsi sprig for color variation and serve with a side of melted dark chocolate.
8. Dunk them in the chocolate and indulge.
Note - You can coat the round tofu donuts in arrowroot powder before frying them. I tried this with 2 of the donuts, but it was not making much of a difference, so I fried the rest of the tofu donuts without any extra dry flour layer. A few donuts got a nice crack in them while frying but none of my donuts split opened.
