Black chickpea salad with yogurt | Glutenfreewhisk
This salad is a refreshing chickpea salad that is creamy because of the salad's yogurt dressing and is a complete meal that is high in protein and taste. With Indian flavors this chickpea salad qualifies as Kala chana chaat that is super yummy and addictive. High protein meals are in demand because our thalis usually are full of carbohydrates but kala chana or black chickpea is high in protein and makes this salad a high protein salad meal that is too irresistible.
The recipe is quite simple, and you only need to pressure cook overnight soaked black chana and pan fry (not deep fry, just shallow fry) potato cubes with oil, salt and roasted cumin powder. You can obviously add red chili flakes or powder as per your taste. I don't like my home cooked meals to be spicy at all. Because I believe in eating simple (and I mean it, food with minimal spices) and that's the beauty of good food for me. But if you are a spicy food lover go ahead with chopped green chili as well. Rest of the salad is just chopped lettuce, tomatoes, coriander and some basic home spices. You will find some kala chana tadka chaat recipe available online as well. But instead of making a tadka, I am keeping it simple with minimal oil.
Call it a black chickpea salad or kala chana chaat this recipe is perfect for Indian palate as we love our onions, and spices. I am using epigamia's natural Greek yogurt that is high in protein than the regular curd and is naturally thick because this recipe requires thick curd or yogurt. If you are using regular homemade curd, then you can hang it in a muslin cloth for minimum of 30 minutes to reach the desired curd consistency. You don't want your salad or chaat to be watery right. You want it creamy and tasty.
If you are curd or yogurt lover and eating it daily is a mandatory thing for you, which apparently should be the case ideally, then you can even check my chicken salad with cucumber and carrot that has a curd/yogurt marination and curd/yogurt dressing. For vegan and vegetarian version replace chicken with tofu and paneer respectively. Chaat masala powder is the highlight of this recipe because the kick that chaat masala gives to this salad even lemon juice couldn't reach that high. But if you don't have chaat masala available use lemon juice instead.
