Soft jowar roti with carrot | Glutenfreewhisk
Another regular recipe that I have is this jowar roti with grated carrots. I love how the roti in itself becomes a complete meal when cooked with homemade ghee. Making the healthy millet flour even healthier by adding vegetables to it. This recipe is so good, trust me you will thank me. But the question is how to make soft jowar roti with breaking it at home? Is jowar roti high in carbohydrates? How much nutrients one gets after eating jowar roti?
This post will answer all your questions related to jowar roti.
As I have shared my maize flour roti with winter greens recipe with you earlier, this version of my jowar roti is similar yet so different. Jowar flour requires less water while kneading as compared to maize flour and it taste really good if cooked well with ghee nicely. One of my favorite meals is jowar roti with carrot as the texture of this roti is so good that you don't feel likes stopping while eating it. I love winters when it comes to eating good food and one such reason is this that I can make myself millet roti with vegetables. Like organic greens like spinach, fenugreek, spring onions (both greens and whites), curry leaves, coriander and you will get the best roti ever. So, for both maize flour and jowar flour my everyday meal involves a pick of these and I have my meal sorted.
Making soft jowar roti is no challenge for me. I prefer my dough to be soft with enough water so that I can flatten it on the kitchen cloth with ease. I am using the same method as I have used in my maize flour roti and all you need is a small bowl to knead the dough, some rest time of 5-10 minutes, a greased hot pan, a clean kitchen cloth to flatten the roti, some basic skills to handle the cloth and these amazing ingredients as mentioned below.
The benefits of jowar are many. People dealing with weight loss, diabetes, are looking for gluten-free roti options or are looking for healthier lifestyle by incorporating healthy roti that is rich in fiber, protein and carbs then Jowar or sorghum in your diet will do wonders. Sorghum is also rich in Vitamin B and improves digestion as well. Millets are the new normal and a lot of people are still reluctant to add these in your diet and forget wheat flour but once you eat it my way trust me you will not look back.
My soft jowar roti recipe at home with different vegetables is a great recipe for kids and for working professionals who wants to eat healthy but have little time to fix meals. You will love this and your kids will eat it, just add good ghee and make soft and flavorful roti and it will be gone in minutes. The benefits of jowar roti are so many that it is highly recommended to add jowar millet in your diet regularly.
With this I will say that eating a few thin round chapati or eating an evenly cooked flat chapati will have the same effect on your body and will give you same calories and energy. So, stop worrying about rolling the jowar roti with a rolling pin on a rolling board. Because I don't do that and my chapatti comes out great and it even rises. So, focus on eating at home, cook your own meals than focusing on a round chapati or any other small things.
My recipe for Jowar roti with winter greens is another great recipe to indulge in. And since both maize flour and sorghum flour have different texture, flavor and water requirement they taste exceptional. A must try recipe.
INGREDIENTS -
For soft Jowar roti with carrot
3 tbsp jowar flour
half carrot, grated
half tsp roasted cumin powder
salt to taste (optional)
Water, to knead the dough
Ghee, to cook the sorghum roti on both sides
For jowar atta try Jiwa Sorghum millet flour or jowari atta that will give you the best and soft jowar roti
METHOD -
1. In a bowl knead the dough using the above-mentioned ingredients. Keep the doughs soft and on the wet side. If you knead the dough hard, then your roti will become hard and even crispy on the edges. It will be a problem even for your stomach to digest the hard roti.
2. Once done let it rest for 10 minutes. In the meantime, heat the pan with some ghee on it and take a clean kitchen cloth (In Indian families we have a kitchen cloth to keep the cooked roti's in or a cloth that is used to cook roti on a hot pan.) or a cling wrap (If you don't have a kitchen cloth, use a cling wrap) and put the dough on it.
3. Now flatten it using your hand until it is even on side and flat from the center too. A perfect jowar dough will not even stick on your hands or create trouble. It is one of the best doughs to use for making roti this way.
4. Now flip the roti on your stretched palm from the cloth or wrap and immediately transfer it on to the hot pan. Cook it on both side by applying ghee. I make small superficial cuts on one side of the roti before adding ghee. This is totally optional. This lets the ghee enter inside and makes the roti cook evenly.
5. Once done on both sides, cover and leave it in the pan for a minute after switching off the flame. Then serve warm with any curry or indulge just like that. It is so flavorful and tasty that this can be eaten alone as well.
Note - I add very little salt to just bring out the taste of jowar. I will suggest that if you are adding it do not add a lot of salt. Because the sorghum flour is supposed to enrich your body so don't make it too salty.
