Amla Chutney with Jaggery | Glutenfreewhisk

Amla, the Indian gooseberry the super food has many health benefits that it is like a tiny green wonder. Rich in fiber, vitamins C and has anti-inflammatory properties and is good for people with diabetes as well as it is an antioxidants rich food. In Indian food amla is used in many ways and one such way that Indian celebrate ingredients is by making pickles and chutneys.

Amla ka murabba is such a great recipe and so is amla ki chutney. A perfect mix of spices, sweet and salt. I am using jaggery in my amla chutney recipe today and this chutney is so toffee like that it is almost addictive. The sharpness of fresh ginger, the taste of cumin powder and the sweet toffee like texture that jaggery gives it with the bitterness and sourness of Alma this chutney recipe is like a beauty.

In many Indian household foods with chutney or pickle is incomplete and in winters people are scared of getting sore throat if one ate too much tangy chutney and pickle. But my amla chutney recipe is soothing to the throat and gives that warmth on the inside that winter season asks for. Amla or Indian gooseberry is a versatile ingredient. It can be eaten raw as well and if consumed on empty stomach it has many health benefits. Initially, I was planning to add honey to this amla chutney recipe but later I changed my mind and thought of adding jaggery instead and trust me the result is delicious. The candy like taste, the health benefits hidden behind is wonderful. It becomes a really good recipe for kids as the beneficial ingredient is not always tempting and kids run away. But this toffee like amla chutney recipe is absolutely kids friendly recipe. You can choose to add a lot of spices too with red chili powder, but I have kept it really simple. I have made a small batch of it, but you can definitely make a big batch and refrigerate it.

Amla chutney with jaggery and ginger is perfect for days you are craving some sweet yet salty chutney that are healthy and you can even feed your kids. This recipe for amla chutney is a must try.

INGREDIENTS - 


4-5 Indian gooseberry or amla, chopped

Jaggery, as per taste

Salt

1 tsp black pepper powder (Optional)

1 tbsp olive oil

2 tsp roasted cumin powder

Half inch chopped fresh ginger

1 cup water, for cooking amla 


METHOD -


1. In a pan add oil and roast the powdered cumin seeds. Now add chopped fresh ginger and cook it till it becomes soft and brown.


2. Add chopped amla to it with water and let it cook by covering the pan and cooking in simmer. Once amla is all soft and almost done and the water is evaporated add the chopped jaggery and let is all cook again.


3. This step is important as the jaggery will release it water and will take time to cook and turn candy like so be patient and let it all cook in simmer. Once it has reached your desired candy like consistency add a pinch of salt and black pepper. Stir and enjoy will meals.


4. It will stay good in a refrigerator for months.


Note - Chop the amla in small pieces so that it takes less time to cook and get soft faster. You can even add dried ginger powder and hing/asafetida in this recipe. My amla ginger chutney recipe is non spicy and kid friendly recipe so I have kept it simple and easy.
